I've spent 3 years in Riyadh and never once saw a guy in a turban (that's not to say there aren't any but I sure never saw any).

Popli

Thanks for reply. I have got a job offer from Sabic petrochemical. This religion is a big concern for me to decide to go ahead with the offer or not. Also to add I have a s,all family which will join me later and by the word of mouth till now I have got confusing reviews.

Looking for some favorable replies. THANX again

No @Popli. Don't you worry at all. I've seen Sardars many times esp in the Eastern region. Jubail is on east coast and is one of the most liberal cities of KSA.

Good, TLL.  I'm glad to hear that the turban isn't a deal breaker for him!

Popli

Why would you assume I'm male?

Popli

Oops I'm sorry. I thot in Saudi all action is done by males. Sorry for the assumption.

Popli

I have met a Sikh guy at riyadh, the only concern he told me was the big turban which he used to wear and people used to ask him too many questions about it so eventually he started to wear the small turban ( I think its called as Patka)

But no major Concerns and as told by TLL jubail is a bit more liberal. So good luck !!!:)

Are you guys running this forum ?? Appreciate the time u spent 4 answering the queries.

I have been reading a lot on this forum (fom the day i've joined ) about almost everything and guess, I have got all kind of responses what I have been looking for. Except some. More negative things than the positive things. Bureaucracy, driving, culture, restrictions, weather, etc etc

I would love to ask you guys two questions, apart from money, what's the reason to come to KSA ..? Mmmmmm I'm not able to find anything, hence difficult to convince people around me. Another one, what's the best thing you have liked here in Saudi ? The questions are asked to get some positive responses.

Also if possible pls highlight the unwritten etiquette of this forum. Read some dos and donts. They look very generic. Is it ok to b on the forum with ur name or pseudo name is preferable ?

Sorry for being naive.

You're not looking hard enough, Popli!  Here's a recent thread:

/forum/viewtopic.php?id=198804

As far as etiquette, one thing that pisses people off is when somebody pops in and asks a question that's been answered 1,000 times.  It appears that they don't want to spend the time reading but expect us (unpaid, no less! lol) to repeat the same things over and over again.

Another thing that isn't good is to bring religion into discussions.  This forum operates in cyberspace and is not subject to sharia law ;)  I mean, it's okay if it's in a rational, informative way (read between-hope-and-fear's postings regarding Islam--very well done) but some folks have gotten very pushy and judgmental and it does nothing but stir up an otherwise friendly, multinational forum--and gets them banned, too!

Most of us use pseudonyms because we want to be able to speak freely here (always remember that the forum may be 'monitored,' if you know what I mean).

So far I would say you're doing just fine, Popli... with the exception of calling me 'brother'

Alliecat

And let me add to the list of good things:

1. the amount of holiday time I get here (45 days--pretty much unheard of in the US!).

2. the opportunity to meet and work with people from all over the world.

3.  FREE healthcare (again, a big issue in the US).

Popli

If you love cars and Driving, Then the gas is really cheap another advantage surely at the cost of the environment !!

Well let me think another reason apart from money, Knowing Arabian Culture, May be....

Popli

THANX Saiman and alliecat.

A funny question raised by my wife, can jackets or pullovers be worn over abaya or abaya is the final body armor ?

Alliecat

@popli  I've seen mostly Filipino girls/women with jackets over abayas but it's not a 'good' look, if you care about such things lol

Usually Arabic women wear pashminas or a kind of long pancho (unstitched sides but also in the front) that fits well and looks very nice over the abaya.

Wearing an abaya is a big issue . From this point of view maybe I'll came alone in KSA .

Wearing an abaya is the least difficult thing here, trust me.

Actually, abayas are kind of handy because you don't ever have to get dressed up.  Lots of times, out grocery shopping on weekend mornings, I'll see pajama cuffs poking out the bottom of abayas lol

Thanks for your reply alliecat . I'll take into account your advice .

Popli
