Social Events at Embassies
Great thread topic and great posts....Max -- my suggestion? DO IT!! And count me in! OMG please....and thank you.
There. Phew....So glad you're taking care of it...
Don't feel silly at all Max, I posted a thread and you had a reply. I am by no means an expert, but I am fairly in tune with the single social scene around town...my main deficiency is the married social scene.
I saw another post where a gentleman was very surprised at how many restaurants and other places he liked to go did not have a family section..he only realized this afer his wife arrived..
I found myself thinking about the places I like to go, and I think this is the case for me aswell...
My primary intention in making the other thread was to see if I could find some other women who have some activities they do that maybe my wife could tag along in. I am not on a compound, and I only have one other co worker who has his spouse here. So in an effort to not pawn my wife off on her for the entire ten days, thought I would throw a feeler out here...
we are an australian familly just moved to saudi...i registered with the australian embassy and just got an email invitation for theit up comming function, so my wife just wanted to know how these functions are like...i mean in regards of the dress code should women be following the saudi laws in wearing the black abays....another thing is it a male dominant function?
I went to a Christmas party at the Aussie Embassy and it was like business casual or a dressy-blouse-with-jeans type of thing and, of course, dress shoes can make any outfit seem a lot nicer!
The Christmas event was outside (lovely weather in December), in the embassy courtyard, and there was a DJ, music and dancing.
I think you'll both have a wonderful time! As it turns out, Aussies are some of my favorite °µÍø½ûÇøs because they're so down-to-earth and have such great senses of humor!
Aussie embassy events are relaxed events, it's plastic tables and chairs out on the tennis court behind the embassy. The dress code is smart casual and there is a rack near the tennis courts for women to hang their abaya's on.Â
There are a lot of Australian nurses so there are generally more women than men at Aussie Embassy functions.
Try to get your registrations in within the next couple of days to make sure you make it on the list.
If their are any other Australian Passport holders here who require a copy of the event notice, please message me your email address and I'll forward it to you.
thanks for your quick replies...well alethe i have just sent my registration to the coolabah email address with the required data....and once again thanks for the info,,,
Some days it's nice to be way the hell out in Jubail, so the heady problems of what embassy function to attend tonight doesn't perplex the poor working stiffs who just manage to hang on to their sanity here.
Best reaction I've ever heard to Aussie Embassy function, from an Indian Australian when asked if he'd enjoyed himself.
"I had such a good time, I'm going to support Australian in the cricket from now on."

redgems wrote:How can I find out about events going on at embassies in Riyadh? I've heard there are paid and non-paid events. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
All events you have to pay for. There are some events that yu need to be a member of Usera and thereare some events you don't need to be a member of any organization. And the sticker shock is that an event usually runs 250RS.

I can post the American Embassy functions if people need them...
that is good
anybody can count me , im gonna be pleased with that
Hi. Anyone with any ideas about when/where/how to get invited to any embassy part, please let me know. Im fun to hang out with I swear. Thanks,
Jim

I kid you not - you gotta know the right person who knows the right person who knows the janitor!! The last couple of events at the US Embassy I found out from a Saudi friend. LOL
I only get invited when it's crazy expensive tickets their friends don't want LOL
BTW, nice to see you're quoting me, houstonian. I'm the one who came up with the line about the janitor in one of my rants!
Heard about a party on Dec 6 2012 at American embassy in Riyadh. Has anyone got more information, where to get tickets (contact phone no.), how much they are?
Thanks

And you are so dead on with that statement!!
Thanks! It takes another American to appreciate it
Went to a party my first week here and have been going ever since. If you need to know how to get into embassy parties (especially U.S and it's affiliaties) PM me. I don't want to post it here.
Cheers
Alex
We can get into parties anytime we want, but the issue is it's the big bucks, get-dressed-to-the-teeth, every-body-has-a-date affairs.
Can you get me into something fun and simple, like Happy Hour?

Bukrah, Inshallah (I'm sure you know what THIS means lol)

What's to laugh about is that we ALL know what this means (unless *you* don't and if you don't, you must be living under a rock!).
if there would be country music singers then i would wanna be there. So alex help your brother out and tell me bout them events you are talking about.

I don't know about that though, the only full on event I've been to was the US Ambassador's residence during Christmas....
Crappy finger food, which ran out, believe it or not and Christmas Carols that had verses changed/switched around for no particular reason....and why on Earth should we have to wear suits to a carolling event?!
Bah, never mind. The Steak nights at the US Embassy is good, or so I've heard.
I've also heard the British Embassy is running an event on New Year's Eve. Anyone here going to that?

For sure. I hear it's going to be off the hook!

do you have any details about this event???
Yes, it's on New Year's Eve and it's at the British Embassy
But tickets are 200SAR, with food from Al Khozama hotel, DJ and a band! Looking forward to it!

The idea of Steak Night at the US Embassy has an almost poetic beauty to it. But I'm not sure how well I'd mix with such a crowd. Maybe someone could give me a jingle when they have a vegan-quiche type event.
I do think it would be brilliant if everyone from this blog crashed one of the Happy Hour Functions mentioned earlier and turned it into a flashmob or something. We just need some advance intel about when it's happening and someone on the inside to put our names on the list.

I think the Happy Hour events were at the Germany Embassy, which has now stopped hosting those kinds of functions, something to do with the Ambassador only liking formal black tie events with big wigs...
But the question is what are you doing on New Year's Eve?
Does anybody know if there is a New Year party at the British Embassy and if so how do you get on the guest list.
Thanks in advance.
