Why should it be a miserable experience........??

That is only your personal opinion and what do you base this opinion on ???

What may seem miserable or negative to you may well be different for someone else.

I agree with Stumpy. I have been living in Riyadh for 6 months and have found both °µÍø½ûÇøriate and local women in my apartment complex who are warm and welcoming. They have given me tips on how to find things, and have sometimes gone out shopping with me. This country has lots of interesting historical sites and things to do, also. It's all in one's openness to a different way of doing things, and staying in the humble learner mode.

Also, I recently met an Australian nurse who loves her job (sorry, don't remember which hospital). She came not knowing any Arabic and has learned quite a bit from her patients. She also recently started private lessons with a local teacher, and I have done the same. Great fun.
