Dubai is very expensive. The official cost of living index indicates an increase of 9-10% every year, but I think in real life, it is much higher.
I had a one bedroom apartment in one of the oldest apartment blocks near Shk Zayyed Road (was close to work, so that was convenient). I did not live luxurious. I was alone, as my family lives in Belgium. Overall, I spent about US$2,500/month. Most of it was rent.
Schools are expensive and in generally full.

As I described in some other posts on this forum, the job market in Dubai is VERY competitive, so wages are low compared to the cost. Employees don't have a lot of protection, and get easily fired.

The main tip I can give you is to look for housing (and schooling) in Sharjah. Better rates there, although the rent inflation was picking up fast too by the time i left (a year ago). Living in Sharjah, while working in Dubai will mean joining the daily traffic jams unless if you can have flexhours.

On the other hand, if you are good in your job, you have the opportunity to shine in Dubai. People are known to make fast careers.

From what you wrote, I guess you're expecting a 2 bedroom apartment. The prices vary a lot depending on the location. When I checked prices last time in July, the rent for a 2BR near Sheikh Zayed was AED8,000. You can check the online brokers and newspaper ads there. Here are two links
