Moving to Toronto

Lyndsay

Hi, I wondered if anyone could give me some advice.

My husband and I are relocating to Toronto in about September.  The problem is the city is so vast we don't even know where to start when it comes to deciding where abouts to live.  We are moving with my husbands job which is based on the harbour front. However, neither of us want to live right in the heart of the city if this can be avoided.  He doesn't mind travelling a way to work.  I will not be working initially as we have a young daughter (she'll be just 2 by the tine of the move.

We would be looking to rent for the first year or so and have a budget of around $1,500 - $2,000 a month.  We want at least 3 bedrooms, preferably detached or semi-detached and a garden (we will be bringing our dog).

Ideally we'd be looking for an area with a small town kind of feel although I appreciate this may be a rather unrealistic dream.  can anyone give us an idea of what areas might be worth a look?

Hi,

High Park area is pretty good, its right on the subway line, right near the park , and not to far from the lakefront. Try too stay closer to the runnemede/bloor, other then keel st as it is much cleaner. The major intersections - jane/bloor, runemede/bloor, keel/boor. You can check it out on googles maps. Also another good area is Kingsway( Queensway and Windermere).

These places are on the west side of T.O. I used to live there for a number of years and personally think they are the best.(not too expensive, quite, close to the lake, 15 min to downtown core by car, 30 min by street car or subway) .

You have to be carefull as not to pass kingsway on the west side and keel on the east and just focus on whats in the middle. Also do not higher then 3 blocks north of bloor

Hope this helps

All the best

Lyndsay, you'll like Toronto as big & as beautiful as it is

Cica has given you some good suggestions, although a city thats 50 km wide x 20km+ top to bottom, there really is no small town feel.

Depends on whether transportation or schools play a big part of your relocation, or whether like some who commute on the intercity GO Bus/Train traveling 30 - 40 minutes would bother you.

Outside of the core city, there are lots of places

suggest that you search on the web for rental ideas at

mls.ca

Pick Toronto as the location, then rentals. This way you'll get an idea

If renting a house, even if its a town house, semi, condo etc - the $1500 - $2000 is a good range. On top of that you'd have utilities & insurance which would be at least total another $200/mth budget

Then Phones, (cell-mobile), internet & cable TV - budget another $150 - $200/mth

Hope this helps
