Armand

Can a foreigner take the driving test in Mexico?

What are the formalities to get a driverÂ’s licence in Mexico?

Do you need special or extra documents being an °µÍø½ûÇøriate?

How much does it cost?

Thank you for participating ;).

It varies from state to state. Bottom line qualifications are either an FM3 or FM2 type visa, passport, and proof of residence.

Yes you can have a drive license. First thing is that you have to be a resident and then by law you have to get your own drive license that you'll after paying 400 $, more or less, for one year. You don't pass an exam but you have to be a resident. This is how it worked for me in Valle de Bravo!

Thanks for helping Soledadmtnez ;)

Hi Armand,
Once you got sorted with your license would you let us know.
I am moving to Cancun from South Africa soon and have a South African drivers License.
I wonder, would I need to re-apply for a Mexican one, could I just drive around with my SA one, or should I apply for an International license now, before I leave South Africa for Mexico?

Regards,

Joanne Sandoval

Your SA license is good in Mexico as long as it hasn't expired. If you buy a Mexican car, i.e., with Mexican License plates, it would be a good idea to get a Mexican license from the state of Quintana Roo.

An International Drivers License is not a license, but merely a translation of you drivers license to an international standard. Still your SA license is good.

Florida licenses are good for ten years.  Does this mean I can drive around for ten years in Mexico without ever getting a Mexican license?  Florida, having a lot of seasonal residents, also lets you keep your license active here, even if you have one from somewhere else, so I'm thinking I could just keep renewing my Florida license forever.  Is that a bad plan?

Many who live in Mexico have driven here for years without getting a Mexican drivers license issued in the state where they reside. This includes driving both imported cars and cars bought locally. The rules for a drivers license vary from state to state. Generally, you need a FM2 type visa, however, some states will issue a license with a FM3 type visa. As you might suspect, a Mexican drivers license is a very good ID.
