West Coast Road Trip- Car ideas?

I looked up rental cars for my road trip at the end of April 2012 and its nearly $700! I cold try and stick close to public transportation but wondered if there are better ideas so I can have my own freedoms & time control.

I would be flying in to seattle driving south to fly out of LAX most likely. any help or suggestions would be really appreaciated!

My idea is to choose jeep when you try to travel on road. I have made the same decision.聽 The another necessary tool for you is power inverter. Since you may need to charge camera and phone in this travel. To inverter to me is 400w DC 12v to AC 100v power inverter from bestek. Friend recommends this tool to me in last year.
