Question about health insurance for Belgians in Australia

armamoza

Dear forum members,

We are a couple of 26 and 33 years old, both self-employed. We are Belgians, currently living in Belgium, but we are looking to work and live as permanent residents in Australia, also as self-employed workers.

Is there anyone who could advise us on the suitable health insurance options for our situation to cover any waiting period that might apply for us before we could benefit from Australia's Medicare system.

What has been your experience with this?

Thx & Cheers,

Armamoza

Hi Armamoza, While Australia has a social Medicare program, the health system is not entirely socialized.  If you are deemed able to afford private medical insurance because your income is high enough, you must purchase private insurance coverage or you will have to pay an increased Medicare Levy.  And if you do not purchase private medical insurance before the age of 30, the cost of insurance can be even higher.  Three medical insurers that I can think of at the moment are Medibank, NIB, and MBF.

Good Luck.

Julien
