NEW RG in Polycarbonate Format: Has anyone gotten one?

Nomad Mundo

Brazil's new unified identity card, the RIC, was first announced in 2009. The working group's proposed model was similar to the one used throughout Europe: a polycarbonate card (akin to a credit card) with an embedded chip. But that would involve Congress to pass the requisite legislation, and it's astonishing how long this took to be implemented. They even approved a legislation in 2017 establishing that the TSE would be in charge of providing these new IDs, which makes ideal sense given that it is a national organization with a broad footprint and already possesses biometric data on virtually every Brazilians. The TSE even created a test model, but the project did not materialize.

After millions of lengthy and worthless communicates in Congress, a decree ended up being signed in 2022, just eliminating the TSE and simply delegating the task of issuing the new identity card to the states itself (as it was previously). However the significant surprise was Article.5- Identity Card will be issued on secure paper or polycarbonate card. In a nutshell, after 28 years of contemplation, we were just given forecast for the new identity card on paper/card, whenever they ask for your identification, you pass over a parchment, just like a feudal traveler.

As per legislation on paper, it is up to the states that decides whether or not it will offer citizens the option of having their new identity card issued in polycarbonate. As previously indicated, citizens will be able to select this option if they pay and the state issues it. I haven't seen anyone got himself/herself issued this new card as of yet. None of the states I looked into offered this option. The idea is that they gonna simply ignore this option because it is not mandatory and nobody care for it at all anyways!

08/08/24 @Nomad Mundo.  I'm currently in the process of getting the new card and documenting the process I'm going through here:  /forum/viewtopic.p … 82#5952404

I wasn't offered a polycarbonate option.  My husband already has the new card, so I expect that mine will be identical.  It's paper, and has the same form factor as the current CNH (Driver's License, folded), so smaller than the current RG, and more or less wallet-size if the holder provides appropriate protection.  It has a photo and a QR Code, presumably referencing the rest of the biometric data, no chip.

Amazonas has apparently taken the paper option, but Amazonas is a poor state:  SP, MG, RJ or the DF may well offer the alterate choice.  It will be interesting to see.

I read where there is also a digital version so maybe having a plastic version isn't that necessary anymore.
