@brianbrasil Congratulations on the move. I am a Permanent Resident and have lived here (from MD.) over 2 years.

I live in a very small village in Northeastern Brazil, so some of these may be skewed to village life.

TOP 2 BRAZILIAN THINGS I WILL NEVER GET USED TO.

1. #1), Toddlers and Kids riding with adults on the back (or even handlebars) of a motorcycle.  Forget about car seats etc. These are kids who just learned to walk a few years ago. This would be MAJOR if someone saw this in the USA. Here families do it all the time.
2. #2), Fires in the yard and the street. As a result of the non-existent trash pickup. Some trash is burnt in public.

There are two things I am now comfortable with. (One) that I live in the wildlife and the daily sight of chicken, horses, pigs etc. roaming the street. The biggest one is the half-dozen bulls that live next door that our two dogs bark and herd every day.

(Two) That even though I have been coming to Brazil since I was 10 and do know "Transactional Portuguese", how much I can get by communicating with my body language, even with total strangers.

Another gringo here. Don't worry, you'll adapt to the "maneira", and the language will get better every single day. I've been travelling here for 24 years and living here full time for the last 3 months now. Married to a Brasilian as well.

Where to buy things. I google in English but really need to search in Portuguese.

Learn metric! SNL has a great skit on that.

I absolutely love the food though.
