Driver's License Renewal at DETRAN

abthree

05/28/25   Today I went to renew my CNH for the second time at DETRAN-AM headquarters in Manaus.  I was in and out in 15 minutes.  Tomorrow I'll have my medical exam and if it's like last time, I'll my new license next week.

All of my dealings with DETRAN-AM have been like this:  they're friendly, professional, and pretty fast.  On the other hand, they're one of the DETRANs that is very hard over on the requirement for at least basic command of Portuguese for anyone trying to obtain a Brazilian license on the basis of a foreign one.  Which goes to show once again, probably, that all the DETRANs follow basically the same rules, but they're all different.

Was the renewal for you the same as for other Brazilian CNH's, or did you have to show additional documents?

A colleague of mine in SP had to again show his translated foreign license, according to Detran to prove he didn't loose it over the years. This surprised me a bit.

When you get your new card, let us know if it still says you are a foreigner ;) .

05/29/25 @JNSQ86.  Good question.  I realized late last year when I got my new CIN that the Ministry of Justice hadn't notified other agencies of my naturalized status, so I went to DETRAN this past February to get it changed.  They said that they had updated it, and since I knew that I'd be renewing now anyway, I didn't bother to ask for a revised 2a via then.  I'll post the results when I get the new one.

Strange!  I have renewed my Brazil driving license several times, but I only had to show the translation once, when I first applied, 18 years ago. But it does still say I am a foreigner...
