Ouch! Social Security Hack!

roddiesho

I am still in the early stages of investigating this, but I just lost almost $200 from my monthly Social Security deposit.

Has anyone else received a different amount this month?

On the very first page of the  SSA site, scrolling down to "Benefits and Payments" you can see what they say the deductions from you last payment were and how much they say that they deposited.

Clicking on "View your payment history and overpayment details" will let you compare your recent payment with previous payments according to SSA records.

If you download your current "Benefits Verification Letter", you'll see exactly what they're deducting and for what.  Your "2025 Social Security Cost of Living Increase" letter from November 2024 is still available in the "Messages" tab of the website and has the same information.  If SSA changed any of your deductions, there should be a notice in "Messages" too.

Good luck -- I hope that you can get to the bottom of it soon.

@abthree Thanx for your reply. I actually don't use the website because of a constant challenge with having two sign-ins. (ssa.gov and log-in.gov) One sends me to the other one, or doesn't let me in.

I usually just call. Anyway, it appears that it was a Medicaid / Medicare monthly payment. I did not sign up for it and have no idea why it started. I don`t even know if you can have it or if it makes sense to have it living in Brazil.

The agent was nice enough to offer that I could cancel it. She will send the form to my last known address, which is my brother's house in S.F. He will then send me the form in Brazil - with a small gift for our mother who we take care of night and day and who he doesn't even call - I will then sign it and send it back to him to forward to the SSA. 😎

P.S. I connected to °µÍø½ûÇø.Com / Spain also since my brother will move their next year.

06/07/25 @roddiesho  Yes, that sounded like the Medicare Part B withholding; it was just surprising that you weren't paying it all along.

You are allowed to cancel Medicare Part B, which covers doctor visits and other important services.  The risk of canceling is that if you return to the United States and want to reinstate it, you'll pay a monthly penalty for the rest of your life.  Here's a page that talks about Medicare Part B costs:

@abthree Thanx! I`m not returning. I`ve even seen my Brazilian burial site. 😎
