Receiving Satellite English TV Channels

MKubba

Hallo
Can anyone help in suggesting how would I receive English language satellite TV channels in central Brazil (Goiania)?  I checked on the main providers Eutelsat and Hotbird, but they did not beam any such channels to Brazil

Many pay TV companies like SKY and cable TV companies offer several English language channels such as AXN, National Geographic, Discovery, History Channel, BBC News and various movie channels if you can't get a satellite signal from home.

If all else fails, some of the broadcast TV networks like GLOBO and SBT do have some programs that are simulcast in English if you have a TV set with SAP (secondary audio program) capability. These are usually the US network series episodes broadcast here.

Good luck.

Dear Mr. Woodward,
Thank you very much for your helpful advice.

I understand from you that there is no way in Brazil to set up a parabolic antenna, up to the sky and recieve Aljazeera or BBC as we do here in Europe?

I guess you can have a parabolic antenna pointed to major sattelites, what you should check is which sattelites are available for each diameter of antenna. I´m quite sure you will need a big dish to get US or Europe sattelites...

There are two factors to consider that I really know nothing about, first being the availability of the equipment here in Brazil to receive and decode the signal (parabolic dish, receiver, etc) and second, if the equipment can be purchased here you need to find out the coordinates for aiming the antenna from the location of your setup in Brazil. I would suspect that the equipment, if available here in Brazil, would be prohibatively expensive. The satellite coordinates would probably be almost impossible to come by. I think that your best bet and least expensive alternatives still would be either pay TV or cable.

Old post, but what the heck :)

Lyngsat.com will give you details of all the satellites around and what channels they broadcast - as you will need to avoid subscription packages, you should look for free channels.

Once you know which satellite you like the channels for, check the coverage - if it is possible, it will tell you how big your dish needs to be - be prepared for large! Consider English language channels broadcast to locations in Central America too.

Once you have this informtion, you can go to DishPointer - fr.dishpointer.com and enter in the location on Google Maps where you live - the more accurate the better. Once you enter the satellite you want to pick up, this will this will tell you the elevation and direction your dish needs to point.

You can then use a Satellite Finder tool (about R$60 from Mercadolivre.com.br) to line up your dish.

For the decoder, any DVB-S/S2 decoder will do the job I think, although it should be noted that Dreamboxes and the like are ILLEGAL in Brazil. Or, if you have a DVB-S/S2 PCI card in your PC , this will also do the job (as far as I know, these are not illegal in Brazil, although not commonly found).

So - it really depends on the curvature of the earth as to IF you can get US satellites in Brazil or not. I have not tried yet. Good luck!
