Moving to Rio

I've been offered the possibility to move to Rio by my company. I do know the city and have visited it several times, aways liked and having and speak spanish and portuguese fluently. At least that is what I think. I would like to see if someone can help me to get an idea of the cost of living in the city.

I am single and will lease a two beddroom apartment in barra da Tijuca, my office wil be there. I might even buy the apartment if it makes sence. I will have to buy a car but I have not decided yet if new or used.

Hi Pablo!

I'm from Rio, living now in London.聽 Rio is very nice to you if you earn in foreign currency.聽 Food is a lot cheaper than abroad, but eletronics in general are much more expensive.聽 You should consider bringing the best laptop with you, unlocked blackberry, maybe a tv - if you are into it.聽 Remember to always have insurance over anything you have, robberies are quite comom, unfortunately.
As for a car, in Brasil you get much less for your money.聽 The cheapest brand new car will be around 15K dolars, and that means no frills, not even an air condicioning.聽 Prices drop dramatically from a brand new one and a few months old one.聽 It all depends on what is important for you in a car.聽 Remember you can't survive without air-conditioning, as you should not open your windows when stop at traffic lights...

Thanks Vicky for your coments. I do know rio quite well and I visit the city every 30 to 40 days. I am probably going to earn in R$ but it will be my actual salary in USA translated to R$. It is quite an amount of money so I think it should be sufficient. Having lived all my life around South america I do understand the security problems. I was wondering how much money I will need to rent a good apartment in Barra. do you have any idea? I am usuming it will be less expensive than living in Houston. I know cars and stuff here is inexpensive but food, cleaning and the rest of the things that make a normal life should be cheaper in Brazil/ I am correct to asume that?
