Children's risk in Ecuador

I am hearing different things from either USA sites, or forums, or studies聟 but what is your opinion about the risk to American children in Ecuador? Kidnapping of children, or other risks?

I live in Ecuador with my young family. I spoke to a few Ecuadorians about this and they said it's not a problem here. There are other safety issues though. I do not take taxis at night and you do have to be careful about streets and crazy drivers. Overall we are very pleased with the schools, activities and safety here in Ecuador.

There have been kidnappings, but they are few and far between. Like joeyeggs, I have never heard my Ecuadorian friends talk about it. We have lived in Cuenca for two years.
