Life in the Andes -- Running

BobH

Because of the rotten weather in Chicago, I couldn't run the last week I was there. I've been here two weeks and hadn't found a place, but finally I found a small park nearby.

I don't know if it was due to the three week layoff or because it was my first time running at 9300 feet (probably both, but mostly the latter), but I was really hurting. I barely made it 1km before I had to quit.

It's going to take me quite a while to get even close to the distances I used to run.

Dude there very little oxygen at 9300' at 10,000' your required to be on oxygen if your flying a plane...will take you awhile to build up more red blood cells to carry more o2

Bob,
I am sure your red blood cells will be extra red soon and pushing that oxygen like crazy. One suggestion I think may help is for you to just walk quick and measure your heart rate. After all if you are in the "zone" that is all that matters ;-)

Question . . . Do you know what it cost to join a local gym in Quito? I like to lift weights a few times a week to try to stop gravity from pulling my pecks to my abs area.

LOL -- I hope you're right. But like TNVOL says, I think it will take time and I will just need to be patient and be willing to accept just incremental improvements.

Re gyms: I don't know what the cost is. The local government has built what they call an 'urban park' very close to my apartment (it's called Qmanda) that includes a section with dozens of very nice-looking pieces of exercise equipment. I walked through it and was very impressed -- treadmills, stationary bikes, and weights. I'm assuming the cost will be lower than a private gym, but right now I don't know anything about pricing.

It opens next Saturday*, so I'll let you know more then.

* I mentioned this to my Spanish teacher, who noted that the Jan 25 timing is just right for the municipal elections in February.

Dr warning °µÍø½ûÇø all the time before they come here about the altitude that you can experience pain in different ways and think it is something else it does not have to come as disease/falling over or pressure in the chest/ it can come in lots of ways weakness all of a sudden.  Lots of °µÍø½ûÇø arrive with pills from family doctors to adjust to the altitude till they get to their family doctor.  But some are told...look pick a place in Ecuador at a lower altitude your body can not get use to this ASAP.  Now it did not bother me.  My husband is much much younger then me and his first trip he was perfect and his second trip he was not good took the pills a week and it went away.  So it can depend.  But we are not out there excuse me ha running the streets that is funny BobH.  Forgive me he better not be or he is in a lot of trouble.

BobH 2 yrs ago you could not vote unless you are a citizen.  and someone told us if you did vote they charge you $20.00 wow I thought gee they ought to do that to everyone in America that would work then they should give it to the kids only for pencils and book no teachers unions or congressmen it would be wonderful.
Well anyway now people are telling me if you have a Cedula Card you may vote in your district I am thrilled because it means I become more involved and it will help our Spanish.  This is good.
I have found a very honest I call them a glider my husband calls her a facilitator and you tell her what you want in an apartment and she takes her car and goes out and finds it makes sure its clean, # of rooms, safe location etc etc and  in the right $ price range then makes an appt.  When she picks you up the clock goes on and she now starts charging you which is more then ok.  All her relatives are working in court and her brother is a judge so you kind of feel safe and she draws up the lease to make sure you are safe.  They don't raise the rent for 2 yrs per the law.  She has everything down.  My last friend has 3B, 21.2b,, ,$400,  that is wonderful..but they are not in park and have a dog.
