Wow! That's an excellent system! It's the same in Australia. Bottles and cans have a refundable deposit. Our small actions are just a drop in the ocean, compared to the total problem, but it's worth knowing we've done what we can. And there's a ... Read More

Large crack running by Kath948381

Down the side of our outside stairs in a typical Bulgarian village house. The tiles on the steps have been damaged as well. How do I get it repaired and the whole steps retired? Water damage in the past I think

janemulberry

Kath, if your region has had an unusually dry summer like ours, it's more likely to be that the ground has shunk and so the stairs have settled a bit causing cracking, rather than water damage. There are two approaches to this -- patch it up and see ... Read More

I think John's point is to go beyond sensible fire precautions and look also at the root cause of the changing weather patterns, and what we can personally or collectively do to change things. These are often very different things to what the ... Read More

Well, the local people in my area do say the climate has changed significantly, with hotter and dryer summers and colder winters with less snow and more frost. Crops that used to grow well can no longer be grown. And warming oceans, change in sea ... Read More

Very small but lots of ants in the basement kitchen sink by Kath948381

Is this just a summer thing because of the heat? I've never seen or had a problem with them in the winter

janemulberry

I've seen what I'm almost sure was a slow worm in my garden, but no snakes as yet. Only one or two species of snake in Bg are venomous, right? I won't be happy if I get a snake in the house, but in the garden, it's live and let live. Read More

LOL, I'm old enough to remember that, too. Thankfully we mostly only had the little black ants and big brown sugar ants in our house in Australia. The huge black and red bull ants, with a vicious bite, didn't usually come into buildings, though we ... Read More

Ants can't swim, or breathe in water, so they drown very easily. In the old days in Australia one way of dealing with ant plagues was putting the kitchen table and cabinets up on little moats! If they're tiny brown ants, be careful of any live ones, ... Read More

We can't eliminate ants from the garden (and probably shouldn't try), but you don't have to share your house with them, Kath! There are some suggestions on your other ant thread. Read More

Kath, ants don't like the cold, they stay in their nest and hibernate in winter and early spring. So you'll only see them when it's warmer.I did see a few winged ants last week. Read More

Thankfully there are no fires in our region, either. It's been extremely hot and dry, but there was a decent rainfall two weeks ago which will help reduce the fire risk. I'm praying it stays that way, too, and that the existing fires can be ... Read More

Ants agogo by Kath948381

So tragic, especially when idiot arsonists are involved too! But the wildfire risk is why it's very important to keep dry vegetation well away from the walls of our houses. I see a couple of the unoccupied and unvisited renovated °µÍø½ûÇø houses in our ... Read More
