Intro and questions about moving to Philippines

BigAndy

Good morning ladies and gents

im andy a 38yo military vet that is looking to move to the Philippines i have live in manila on and off while on multiple occasions but as a dod contractor so never had to deal with visas renting and the like. So i have a few questions i was planing to go the srv route but it looks like from what i can tell that they changed the age for that visa from 35 to only 50 and up. Can anyone there verify? And if so how do you go about staying if you are not married or being hired and getting a work visa? Is it simply a get you flight in and a throw away exit ticket. Then once here for up to three years every 60 days extend it? Then at some point leave for a few days and come back to restart that time clock?

second set is around housing and such. Im seeing posts about apartments/condos do not require an acr to rent most of the time but some require post dated checks. Is there local banks that will let you open accounts without an acr? And i assume you find apartments thru one of the many many websites and just explain you would rather pay a little more up front and keep it on a cash payment? Or will they let you sign a year contract without an acr?

my disability payments alone will more than cover what i need to live comfortably but i know ill get bored just sitting every day so once i get there im be looking at work situations but at first i will be living off my gov payments so trying to figure out the ins and outs before im in country stressing out. Thank you for any answers.

Welcome to the forum Andy, enjoy.

Your first post/introduction shows you have done a lot of research. Yes yes and yes in your first paragraph.

Housing/accom can be interesting, don't get burnt, I leased a condo in Manila 13 years ago and found that on FB market place, They wanted 30K per month and I did a deal, 25K per month and I'll pay a year in advance, done and dusted, no ACR1 card just a straight deal with it turned out great landlords that even returned the bond within 2 weeks back to my bank account a year later.

Visas are easy and you are correct. 36 months, exit for a day or month, return then start again. You cannot work on a visitor visa but once you have your ACR1 you can avail PhilHealth as well as try to accomplish a bank account, good luck there.

Enjoy Andy.

Cheers, Steve.

Hang in there Andy, I was also employed for 2 x 6 month stints with an American film company operating here, they did the legwork and payments, after that I learnt very quickly to read and research.

Cheers, Steve.
