SINGAPORE PR Chances

karthikk100

I have a question: does having a home loan in your home country affect PR chances in Singapore?

Backstory :

I have been in Singapore for the past 10 years, did my masters here, started a family etc. Both my wife and I earn comfortably and are actively investing in Singapore. We would like to settle down here, but I availed a bank loan last year in my home country. What would be the chances of getting  a PR in this case ?

Im on the same boat. I started my masters here in 2008.. been here ever since. Have 2 kids. Have home loan in India as well. Applying PR for 14 years. Cant get.

On the other note I had a colleague who is a malaysian chinese, daily commute to Singapore for work. Tried his PR when he was 46yo. He got within 3 months, he used his work place address for the application.

my chinese friends from mainland china who graduated with me all got their PRs, bought houses and settled, while none of my fellow Indian friends graduated with me got PR yet. I do monthly donations ever since Im here, not for PR but for my happiness, I participate in more RC activities than most of my neighbours, its fun.

bottomline: I think it more of a quota issue than anything else. I wont overthink about my investments, social integration etc.

The Singapore authorities do not get your financial data from other countries, so that cannot have an influence!

@beppi thank you. I thought so too.

@beppi

Financial data from other countries may not be sourced, but there is a big catch.

Home loan in an overseas country would in almost all cases imply that the individual will be transferring money out of Singapore to their home country to pay for the loan. That sure impacts your PR chances- if you investing in property elsewhere, paying loans and transferring money regularly or occasionally in large proportions- your chances are not so bright. SG Govt would expect you to invest locally if your intention is to live in SG for a longer term, not elsewhere.

@Shekhz Thanksfor your comment. You are absolutely right: All indicators that you are not fully committed to Singapore can reduce your PR chances.

In addition, if you own property abroad you are no longer eligible for buying an HDB flat - which removes a big factor of motivation to become PR for many applicants.
