Computer woes, where to buy?

Dannyroc3

My 2017 Macbookpro is occasionally getting a huge barcode-like line down the center of my screen, once it filled the whole screen. If I close it or restart, it goes away but that cant be a sign of good things to come.

AI says it could be the screen cable but in any case the repair cost would probably exceed justification.

  1. If anyone thinks they can recommend a guy to look at it. (if its worth it)
  2. I would like to hold out (if it fails) until I return to the US where I might get a better price .
  3. (I have an Ipad)  If I decide to buy another new laptop.
  4. (probably a MacBook air), Where should I look?

Macbooks have all their components welded to the mother board; no hard drives or sticks of memory possible to replace. Due to that every Apple workshop is a good lab. Regarding your issue, If everything works fine after a reboot then I dont think about a bus cable issue but the chip of the graphic component wel.  You should take a snapshot or backup of your files, no matter where you will send your laptop

Go to Apple website the navigate to Service & Support, there you can then search for authorized Apple service centers in Vietnam.

@Dannyroc3

It is more likely to be the graphios chip or assocaited circuitry.  Keep your data backed up and get a new one when ready (as you say, maybe cheaper out of VN).

If your ipad will keep you happy for 6 months you can get the good sales in November.

If this macbookpro has lasted 8 years that is an exceedingly good run, buy another of the same quality?  I have a high-end HP laptop of similar vintage and I have bought the replacement in preparation. :)

@KKK36 the only problem I had with the MacBook pro was these years models had defective keyboards. Apple changed mine 2 times. The battery is connected to it so that was changed also.

I will look into how to back it up, I think it has something to do with the Time-machine feature?

when I have taken it in before, for repair, I just dragged stuff to a thumb drive.

I thought the Pro model had more features but it sounds like you are saying they are better. Quality?

I know they are heavier. One thing I noticed on the new models is the USB’s inputs are only two or three.  Mine has four with one not working.

I got some helpful comments but no recommendations on where to buy a new one If I go that route.

In the US I typically buy a last years model, still in the box off eBay, which saved quite a bit.
