"An American man and his Canadian girlfriend who went missing in Belize were found dead this afternoon, local police confirmed to ABC News". "Drew DeVoursney, 36, and his girlfriend Francesca Matus, 52, were reported missing by their friend Joseph Milholen ...  in the Corozal District of Belize on Friday...last seen at a bar in Corozal".
There are no details available as of yet, but this type of event and news is not good for Belize. It definitely does not bode well for the economy or tourism. Aruba was boycotted for a number of years after the Natalie Holloway incident. I hope the truth about the matter will not be as sinister as implied in the news.

What happened is terrible ,I got phone calls from Friends and family. The whole world know what happened.  It is a terrible crime. We always look to the Government for solution. May be more awareness among tourists about the risks of traveling in Belize may help.
I do not think law enforcement can always be there to help. Avoiding risky situations may help. This means letting the Tourists know there is risk of life (I hate to say it)  while traveling in Belize. I am sure the tourism industry may not like it. (I am in Tourism business). But Honesty is the best policy. BTB need to think about the options. Is it better to let our guests know there are risks while traveling in our little paradise there by reducing crimes and murderers or do a great cover up job and some naive tourists get murdered. I think we are obliged to tell the truth.

This happened recently?

The whole world SHOULD know about what what just happened.

As well as all the other murders that have happened before that.
How many brutal murders of foreigners does it take?
Why do they still promote Belize as a safe place to visit and retire in?

I high-tailed it out of there after my best friend was brutally murdered in her own home in 2013.
The case was never solved and none of these cases EVER get solved, due to police inefficiency and corruption.
And that was not the only reason I left: I lost more property to theft in Belize than I have in any major city in the world that I've ever lived in....and those are many.
Stay away!

When I posted this story yesterday, there was no real info available. It will unfold slowly, as it always does in Belize, but I believe there will be more impetus to solve this crime since it involves 2 'visitors' from 2 countries. I agree there is a lot of corruption and inefficiency in law enforcement in Belize, and that many crimes continue to be unsolved, but there are crimes that do get solved, and we can only hope for improvement in the process. There is no explanation or justification for what happened, but you have to be vigilant at all times in every situation, and not just in Belize.

terrific

According to latest info thePolice are holding and Questioning the Canadian tenant from the house where the girl lived. Seems to be a history of ill feelings. Would be nice to get a quick result to this awful happening.

So Starling.5...you no longer reside in Belize?

The risk of death begins at first breath of life. The most important thing to do when in any country, other than ones own, is to act like you belong there. Be openly friendly, while inwardly cautious, and aware at all times. Detroit, Chicago, Paris etc. aren't any safer.
If you live in a foreign country make friends, especially of your neighbors. Long time residents know where to go, and how to be safe. Just as importantly, learn how to protect yourself and loved ones no matter where you live. It is a better investment than botox or a big screen TV, though you might get them also. lol
