Intimidation

HBosch

I don't know what happened to the post that was here before that a friend kindly emailed to me, about problems with the police in San Juan. It seems to have been erased.

For what it's worth, I have also had less than optimal responses from the Police there. It was necessary on one occasion, I won;t get into the details, to call the Police. To make a long story short, they told me not to call them again unless there was blood. A rather chilling response to say the lease. I was going to make a complaint but was warned by a local woman that it could be dangerous for me. That makes an air of intimidation that the citizens should not tolerate. It is not good for the population nor the tourist business. Ist eine traurige Situation.

Best Regards.

Those of us that come from countries that have a police force that serves and protects it's citizens well are appalled, surprised and sometimes fearful to discover that the police force in PR isn't what we expected. I'm definitely not here to defend the police in PR. But let's stop and think a minute. Puerto Rico can be a borderline third world country in some ways. It's not just palm trees and sunny warm beaches. The government is very corrupt and inefficient. So is the police force. Yet somehow when we go there we expect to get the kind of service from them that we are used to getting somewhere else. It's just not going to happen. That's why I always tell people that it's not such a good idea to move to PR on a whim. These are the kinds of things people need to evaluate  before they make a commitment to move there so they can be well informed. My wife is a PR native and she has already warned me about what to expect from the police. So I have to factor information like that into my decision on whether to live there or not. It also has a huge bearing on where in PR I would live. But good police protection is also sporadic in the state where I live. I've reported gun shots in my neighborhood only to be ignored by the police because it's so commonplace here. No blood, no response.

It seems to have been erased.

I don't think we've deleted something from the PR forum, maybe the thread initiator deleted the discussion ?

I'll check with the mod team tomorrow

I certainly have heard and read horror stories about the police here, but I've also been helped by the police. My car was stolen in San Juan and the police in Dorado found it two days later in one of the neighborhoods there (amazingly still in one piece). My kids have been in minor car accidents where the police have been very thorough and kind in their work. So it's far from perfect, but not all bad.
