Hi, Does anyone applied for nationality in Feb month from Brussels commune? Have you got any update? Please share your experience.
Hi,
I am planning to submit my Belgian nationality application next week.
- I have been residing in Belgium since April 2020.
- Since 2023, I have held an F card.
- I also hold a Belgian Masters degree (120 ECTS credits), which fulfills the social, economic, and language integration requirements,
- I have a certificate confirming my A2-level knowledge of Dutch, as I currently live in Flanders.
I have never been convicted of any offense; however, I am a victim of identity theft.
Another person has committed offenses using my name, including traffic fines and vehicle rentals. A complaint was even filed against me by a car rental company. I contested the fines and filed a complaint with the police.
To date, I have not been contacted by the police regarding the car theft investigation.
The drivers license used had already been reported stolen, and the identity document presented was an Italian ID card for non-EU nationals.
Do you believe that this situation could lead to a refusal of my nationality application?
Should I attach the relevant police reports and complaints to my application already, or would it be better to wait and submit them only in case of a refusal?
Thank you in advance for your help.
@Smlg
No, I dont believe this situation will negatively impact your nationality application, as there has been no court ruling, and most importantly, you have not been convicted or found guilty of any offense. Therefore, there is nothing officially registered against you.
However, you mentioned that you have held an F card since 2023. That means you must have held another type of residence card before that. Please make sure there were no interruptions in your legal stay in Belgium.
To be eligible for Belgian nationality, both your legal residence and your official place of main residence (hoofdverblijfplaats) must have been uninterrupted for 5 years. Note that these are two separate conditions. Legal residence is counted from the date your first residence permit was issued (most likely an A card in your case), while the hoofdverblijfplaats is counted from the date of your registration in the commune. Neither of these should have any gaps not even for a single day.
@Mia0210
Thank you for your response. Just to confirm, does this mean I should not submit my police complaints at this stage?
I held an A card (student status) from June 2020 to June 2023, with a six-month temporary absence due to an internship abroad. I have been registered in the foreigners register since April 2020.
@Smlg
Thats correct you do not need to submit any documents related to the identity theft case at this stage, or any other documents that are not explicitly required in the official list for the nationality application.
You mentioned a six-month absence. Was this an official interruption (such as being removed from the population register or deregistered from your address)? Its important to check this. You can verify it by requesting an attest van hoofdverblijfplaats met historiek (certificate of main residence with history) online.
@Mia0210
Yes, its noted in my file. However, I maintained both my official residence and my residence permit during that time. No hole. Since I was away for less than six months, it doesnt affect anything. I also informed the town hall upon my return
@maharaji1984
No, traffic fines alone cannot be a reason for refusal of Belgian nationality assuming you are referring to standard fines (like speeding or parking tickets) that are sent to you by post or through Doccle, and which you pay. These are considered minor infractions and are not recorded in criminal registers or court records.
However, if you did not pay the fines, or if you were stopped for a serious offense (such as major speeding), or if the public prosecutor decided to open a case against you regardless of the reason and you were summoned to court, then that changes things. If a court hearing took place, it will appear in your judicial record (uittreksel uit het strafregister).
Even then, it does not automatically mean your nationality will be refused. But if such a case exists and is combined with other issues, it may lead the King's Prosecutor (Procureur des Konings) to issue a negative opinion on your application.
There is a clear list of what are considered gewichtige feiten (serious matters), and traffic fines are not on that list
@maharaji1984
Pay them or contest them. A friend or mine got denied citizenship because he did not pay his fine
I had my appointment today.
i need to go a second time because the agent other than the Certificate of successful completion of a cycle of study - master where is stated that the classes were in French wanted a Supplement of the diploma, where the same thing is written.
my next appointment is on August 14.
that was unfair, I had everything.
@Smlg
From which commune ? What other else documents you did bring? I checked for Antwerpen now for earliest appoitment date : 23.12.2025.
You are very lucky almost a month...
@maharaji1984
Vilvoorde dear.
I had:
- legalized birth certificate + sworn translation
- Certificate of successful completion of master
- passport + residence card
With me I had my Dutch language certificate (A2) but she did not a knowledge it, I told her as well that I had the Individual Account but did not asked for them..
@Smlg
Hi,
Its likely that the reason for the problem is that you chose the wrong path to prove your and .
Indeed, you could have proven both with a single document your diploma but the officer probably considered the diploma invalid without the supplement. A bit of research confirms this: the supplement is considered an essential part of the diploma and must be submitted together with it.
However, you could have chosen another path: instead of the diploma, you could have provided a separate proof of A2-level language knowledge plus a certificate of integration (for example, the inburgering certificate).
There is also a third option submitting individual salary account statements proving that youve worked continuously for the last 5 years.
As for the salary documents the officer simply didnt get to that point. Once she/he saw that you didnt have valid proof of integration, she/he stopped checking further.
But of course, those documents are still required .
That said, you didnt give much background we dont know your full list of documents or details about your situation. Its hard to help without that context.
In any case, youll have to go back for a new appointment. But to really understand the issue and know what to bring next time, you need to explain your full situation in more detail.
As for the appointment: yes, you can of course go again in a month.
But if you truly believe that you already had all the necessary documents today, and that it was a mistake by the officer not to accept them, I would advise you to file an online - explain the issue there and demand an earlier appointment.
Good luck!
@Mia0210
Hi Mia,
The only additional document I have to submit is the diploma supplement stating that the Master's was taught in Frenchalthough this is already mentioned on the certificate I had.
I wanted to clarify something: this supplement, along with the official diploma, is typically only issued 6 to 7 months after graduation. Thats precisely why the school provides the provisional certificate. If applicants had to wait for the supplement to apply, many would face unnecessary delays.
Also, when I received the list of required documents, the supplement was not originally included, it was later added manually. If it were truly mandatory, I imagine it would have been listed from the start. Additionally, some friends of mine who used the same diploma for the integration process only submitted the certificate. One of them even studied in English, not in French or Dutch, and had no issues.
Whats most bothers me is the delay. Ive gathered all the documents that were required, and Id really like to avoid waiting an extra month if its not absolutely necessary.
@Smlg
In that case, the best thing you can do is to file a formal complaint with your gemeente (I shared the link above).
In your complaint, you can refer to the fact that the diploma supplement was not originally listed among the required documents, and that you are able to prove your language skills and social integration through other means (if you can).
You can also clearly state that your diploma is legitimate and that all the necessary information is already included in the certificate you provided.
Based on this, you can request an earlier appointment to submit your application.
If there are currently no available slots in the system (which seems to be the case), then submitting a complaint is the only way to get an earlier date.
At this point, it's up to you: either wait patiently or choose to take initiative and assert your rights as a future citizen. We are not in Russia, Iran or Morocco here - we are still pretty much democracy.
Good luck!
@Mia0210
Thank you!
going to the town hall for me is always stressful and triggers me ( I grew up in Italy and administration is a joke)
Hello,
Please if you have any input, appreciated.
1-Application Region:Brussels
10 May 2020: Date of starting work for Belgian company (remotely as it was COVID)
20 July 2020: Arrived to Belgium
14 August 2020: Received A-card from the commune
until 10 May 2022: I was not entitled to pay any taxes in Belgium due to the salary and other regulation of my work place.
11 May 2022 to February 2024: promoted to a job in the same company, was paying a tax and in ONSS.
February 2024 to November 2024: lost my job and was searching for a job all this time, no chomage aid or any aid from CPAS or actiris...etc did not receive any aid from Belgian government
18 November 2024: had another job and still active on it as CDD.
My current A-card will expire on 31 August 2025.
I will continue 5 years of legal residency in Belgium 14 August 2025
My employer submitted the renewal request for an extra year end of June 2025.
My question to you:
I am hitting two deadlines: one for the end of work permit and one for the completion of 5 years residency, and my application is ongoing:
- would I receive an A-card again and THEN apply for illimited permit?
- would the commune and authority will automatically consider that I completed 5-years and give me the unlimited residency card?
- In either case, as I: completed 5 years residency, worked for >700 days and participated in social security, have C1 level in French language. --> would that automatically make me eligible to apply for citizenship this year? I heard that even if I have A-card but completed 5 years of stay and all the above condition I will be eligible to apply for citizenship
- I am expecting a baby by mid-September 2025: would my baby become Belgian? giving that I completed 5 years of legal stay in BELGIUM?
2-Application Date:

@nyamani77
Hi please see below my comments to your questions :
would I receive an A-card again and THEN apply for illimited permit?
Yes you will need to renew your new A card which will expire in 31 August and you are not eligible to have unlimited residence permit yet. You may request at August 2025 maybe B card or similar but its depend which date is your official register date in Belgium.
would the commune and authority will automatically consider that I completed 5-years and give me the unlimited residency card?
In Flanders this is not the case,but in Brussels i have heard people are invited to commune to replace the A card with L card once they are eligible to..But in your case i believe you are not eligible to ask an L card due to the intermittent work.
In either case, as I: completed 5 years residency, worked for >700 days and participated in social security, have C1 level in French language. --> would that automatically make me eligible to apply for citizenship this year? I heard that even if I have A-card but completed 5 years of stay and all the above condition I will be eligible to apply for citizenship
No. You can not apply for nationality without unlimited residence permit even you fulfil all other conditions.
I am expecting a baby by mid-September 2025: would my baby become Belgian? giving that I completed 5 years of legal stay in BELGIUM
If you got Belgium nationality before your child born, yes. Otherwise no.
Let me tell you some facts ;
- Unlimited residence application results may take time up to 6-7 months from the application date.
- Nationality application results may take time up to 5 months.
Wish you best and health with your baby and good luck with bureaucracy.
After waiting 4 month after nationality application should I go to commune and ask for the update ? 4 month legal waiting time is over and no news whats is ever
Hello,
my now ex partner assaulted me in public, but now he wants to report me because I took his phone, which I returned shortly after because he had recorded our private conversations.
He has made an appointment with the municipality to terminate the cohabitation contract one day before my naturalization application (next month) and hes threatening to say that our relationship was fake and only intended to get papers. Thats absolutely not true, and I have proof to show otherwise.
I meet all the required criteria to apply. Could this situation impact my naturalization application?
on top of that hes moving into the property we both bought.
@Smlg
First of all what he is doing not fair at all.
Second, what kind of residence permit are you holding?
Let's say you are dependant and your partner applied to cancel your card one day before your application.
As soon as your application is accepted, even your partner reports that you are no more together you have 90 days right to stay after municipality ask your card.
Won't authorities ask if your relationship is fake where were your partner till now?
Once you are eligible to ask nationality and you fulfill conditions nothing happens.
Be strong don't worry about that! Here is not jungle.
@maharaji1984
I have a F card
I applied for Belgium Nationality on 5th March 2025 at Evere commune. I received a letter from commune confirming that the file was verified and complete and the documents have been forwarded to Parquet du Procureur du Roi on 5th of March and they have 4 months to share an opinion.
It's already 17th of July (4 months 12 days), I still have not received any response. When I check with Evere commune, they say that they have not received an opinion from Parquet du Procureur du Roi.
Is there anyone who has applied for Belgium Nationality before 5th March 2025 from Evere commune and still waiting?
@RKE09
As Ive said many times on this forum: if you want to accept being humiliated and obey senseless delays and violations of your own rights youre free to keep waiting, knocking on doors, and politely begging officials for answers. You can wait a year, or two, thats your choice.
But if you have even a bit of self-respect and dignity, then you should immediately make an appointment to request your Belgian ID card and demand the issuance of your citizenship certificate, based on which your ID will be created.
Once four months have passed and you have not received a refusal, it can only mean one thing: You are a Belgian citizen.
Act like it.
@RKE09
If decision is positive normally you become Belgian.
覺f negative commune should have a notification.
Read nr : 7
Probably commune doesnt know about procedure or , not paying attention .
If i were you i would contact with commune one more time.
@Mia0210 and @Maharaji1984,
thanks for your advice. I have an appointment with commune mid of next week. I will visit the commune and speak with them
Thanks once again
@RKE09
Any update?
Recently most of the people here shared their timeline on way to nationality that they hit 4 months and no answer from commune.
And when they contact with commune the answer was wait another x month(s) .
Is this the case for you too ?
@maharaji1984,
I went to commune with an appointment to know the status of my nationality application.
Commune personnel told me that they have received a positive response from parquet.
They told me to wait for few more weeks and I would receive a mail to my home to go and apply for id card.
Till date, nationality certificate is not generated / available in Mon Dossier nor have received a letter to my mail box
@RKE09
Yes its common I have the same they can take up to 2 month to put all in the system u have to wait just . Its written on commune 1000 web page and thats what they answered me by email. So its common practice now
I made my application from Evere commune
