Earthquake warning

Kath948381

I've just received an earthquake warning on my Bulgarian mobile then we felt a mild shaking. The actual quake was in the sea just off Turkey and it was felt in Bulgaria, Masadonia Greece and Turkey never felt anything like that before but I'm glad that the Bulgarian government (?) send out warnings to mobiles.

Are you near to Turkey, not felt anything up here towards Ruse but seen reports about the quake.

They don't as a rule - maybe you have one of the Quake apps on your phone?

It's an Android phone feature, I got the alert before we felt it here in Plovdiv.

We often have earthquakes in Austria, but they have nothing to worry about. But they have been trying out a new warning system for mobiles, which in my eyes seem to be pointless as the country has a national warming system, the country is covered by sirens so if something happens you know something is wrong: so you turn on the TV or local radio.

Yes I'm living towards Turkey in the Burgas municipality.

"Have nothing to worry about" is offering a hostage to fortune - Mother Nature often has something unexpected up her sleeve!

The most notable 'quake in what is now Austria was indeed over 500 years ago and wasn't huge as quakes go (c5.75) but I suspect that the folks experiencing it didn't sleep too soundly for a long time afterwards.

Comparing that little 'un to the the biggest experienced in Bulgaria in modern times - and which actually occurred in Romania anyway, offers some food for thought: Varna, Ruse and Vidin were essentially totally destroyed - and the city walls of faraway Moscow were damaged.

The Balkans are classed as highly seismically active, and it's worth noting also that we do have volcanic activity around us too. Thira (Santorini) may seem a long way away but the last time it really let rip the effects were noted in China - and the ground there's been shaking away again lately...don't stint on those insurance policies!

It certainly can be felt in places, but there hasn't been any damage to properties. Last year when we had wild stores and floods, then the defence siren system was useful.

They are tested every Saturday at 12.08pm because they are used to summon the voluntary fire brigade.
