Internet - Sorry if this is a well worn question

wrightkarl

As part of the process of working out how we're going to relocate, I need to consider being able to continue working on line.

Outside of the major towns and cities, what's internet speed and reliability like ? I know it's a big question with many variables but a "feel" would help. We're not town people, so looking at houses in villages that satellite the larger towns, if that makes sense ??

Villages that satellite large towns should be good for Internet. I have been very impressed with the connections in villages. Shouldn't have any trouble, but good to double check of course before you buy anywhere.

Worth checking for a good bus service. Then you can have the best of both worlds...village living but easy to pop into town when you need.

We needed internet to continue to remote work and I have paid that little more and taken Starlink and it is a lot better than the Internet we had available in the villiage

"that little more"? Starlink's standard residential service costs 100 leva a month, I believe, and delivers speeds between 50 and 200Mbps. Normal ISPs charge around 12 leva a month for the first year or so, rising to around 20 leva thereafter. That's look like a mighty big "little more" over a year...

In general, internet connectivity is very good in Bulgaria, even in little villages. You can check your local coverage, but I'd guess 5G is pretty widespread by now. Bulgaria is a great option for remote workers/digital nomads, as you can enjoy high foreign salaries with low living and property costs. I've taught both in-person and remotely while living in Bulgaria. My (private) school pay was pitiful, with all the costs and aggravation (and wasted time) of commuting... and having to live in a big expensive city (Plovdiv). The village/remote option is far better!

A "satellite" village is usually a very good option. I recommend towns of 50k and up as they still have a lot of services/facilities, and they should be cheaper than the biggest cities (Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas). There are many very nice mid-sized towns in Bulgaria, so you have plenty of options.

Our village house is in the Balkan Mountains, in a beautiful area near famous Shipka and the Buzludzha Monument. It's just outside Kazanlak, which is famous for its Rose Festival and UNESCO Thracian Tomb. It's less than 15 minutes (by car), so it's easy to pop into town for whatever we need. Stara Zagora (bigger, and a very nice city) is only 40 minutes away. We have 5 buses per day to Kazanlak, and it takes less than 30 minutes... with rail/bus connections all over Bulgaria.

For us, 10km or so is ideal, but some folks are happy living further away from civilization. If you have a car, longer distances are manageable, but I'd not recommend it if using buses. We have fibre internet to the house, by a local provider (one of our village neighbours, surprisingly) for 20 lv pm. It's great! I have a MiFi with a SIM card for occasional use.

Even if you can't get fibre, all the big phone guys (Vivacom, A1, Yettel) will likely be able to give you some kind of (unmetered) mobile-based option (5G is about 100 Mbps for 20-40 lv pm).
