Car insurance

Dickere

Hi all

We're in the process of selling our UK home and moving to Croatia. My OH is Croatian.

We will be driving our UK car there. I know that my existing insurance allows up to 90 days driving in Europe, though I think it is officially on the basis of it including a return to  UK which won't be the case for us.

The main concern is that there will be less than 90 days left before the renewal date (more like around 60). I assume I won't be able to renew if I tell them I am no longer a UK resident at that point.

So should I try to register the car in Croatia ASAP prior to the renewal date, or are there specialist insurers in UK who would cover me for a period of time beyond the renewal date allowing us a bit more time to register and take out Croatian car insurance ?  Or any other ideas on this issue ?

Many thanks !

There is no question about it, you will have to import your car and get Croatian number plates to continue driving.

Thanks, appreciated.

I realise that is the case at some point, I guess the question is more around the time frame.  Could I 'buy time' by using a UK specialist insurer for a period, prior to registering it in Croatia formally ?

Also, when you say import that gives me images of the car arriving on a transporter/crate, we'll simply be driving there.

Oh no, you can drive the car there, you will have to check how long you can drive it with UK plates. I think it is 6 months.  You will also have to exchange your driving license in the first 6 months.

Thanks again.

I understand I can drive with UK plates for say 6 months, but my UK insurance renewal is likely to be after around 2 months.  I assume I won't be able to get insurance in Croatia with UK plates ?  Therefore how can I continue driving until registering the car as Croatian ?  UK renewal won't be allowed as I won't have a UK address, which is why I was thinking of a UK specialist insurer short term who understand these type of situations.

You would have to talk to insurance companies in the UK, I doubt you will be able to get insurance in Croatia with UK plates.
