Trying to get my Steuernummer

Cpttanka

Hi, Im recently moved to Berlin and want to start working as a freelancer. I found the huge form to apply for a Steuernummer and sent it to my Finanzamt email. In a couple of days they answered that I need to apply via Elster.

Ive checked Elster and it seems you need either PR to use it in only apply for SN mode (and I get mine PR in a couple of weeks only) or complete the full registration which means waiting for a letter for weeks.

I found information that applying via Elster is not obligatory, its just an option (since last November). Is it true? Should I send the form I filled in via post?

Can I send invoice without Steuernummer? The companies I work with are okay with that. I really want to earn some money at last.

Will the tax counselor help me to speed up the process? Do you freelancers use their services and which ones in particular?

Thanks for help, Im devastated.

As far as I know, you automatically get your personal tax ID by post shortly (meaning a few weeks) after you register at your local B羹rgerb羹ro, town hall or Einwohnermeldeamt - provided your visa allows work (otherwise you will not get one, because you'll not need it).
In case you mean your business tax ID or MWSt-Nr., you will get that after registering the business.
And no, you are not allowed to issue invoices or perform any business before the formalities are fully done. Sorry, but three to six months of waiting time is what you should have expected.
A tax consultant can probably help you (for a fee) communicating with the tax authority about this.
