should I move to Munich

photo-rower

Hello.  I just joined the forum and am hoping to get some helpfull guidence form people who know....  My wife and I currently live in Washington DC, We've just started a family and want to move closer to family.  My family is in Portland OR, and hers is in Munich.  I've been to Munich many times and love the city and her family (no problem there).  What I'm concerned about (mainly) is the cost of living and work. 1- would I be able to work?  Do I need a special work permit or would being married to a German citizen be enough to allow this.  I speak enough german to "get-by," but am nowhere near fluent.  I see this as being a huge problem with finding work.  Am I right?  I have worked as a personal trainer for the past 6 years, and am currently earning a "professional photographers certificate" from an accredited school in Washington DC.  I have a feeling that my wife would have to be the bread-winner for several years until I could begin to make enough money that she could stay home with the kids.
Any input/thoughts/personal experiences are greatly and warmly welcomed.
Thank you. Chad

Hi,  I just recently moved to Munich 2 weeks to be exact.  Prior here, I worked in Dubai for a telecom company;  Finding a job here is a challenge.  As i have observed (so far) and from some people i know, German language is a must in order to integrate yourself whether it be in finding work or simply socializing, although, what's good about Munich, English is widely spoken here but nevertheless speaking German is more favorable!  However, working for an International compnay is also an option but again, not so much of high percentage but still, this could be an option too.  I am currently studying german in order to (hopefull) get a decent job here also.

Good luck to you!:-)

hi, i am a newbie as well in this forum. Been here in Munich for almost a month. Yes I agree that even English is widely spoken amongst the young people here, it seems still learning German is a must.
On finding a job I think its good to try to look first for companies who originated here and has expanded internationally. You may try to research on those companies.
Also, there are online jobs, work from home jobs, I believe there's a lot also with regards to photography.

All the best to you.
