Hi,
Since there are no borders in EU, can you keep a rental apartment in Portugal and live in France so that you can continue to work towards your citizenship without being there physically?
I am wondering how do they check if you are in actually Portugal or not if you do not leave EU zone.

There are borders in the EU, it is just the Schengen zone which there aren't.

If you only want to be here for a month or two come on your passport. If you want to be a resident you have to be here for a minimum of 180 days. However it doesn't have to consecutive.

I think the lack of NIF activity would give you away. Also, not sure why this would be beneficial. Why pay for an apartment in a country you don’t want to be in? Just come to visit and work towards citizenship in France.

It is because there are more music related jobs in France but they don't have a citizenship program like Portugal as far as I know.

I think you are the only one here who didn't understand my answer....

You should start by applying for a residence permit. For that you have to have a NIF and become a tax resident. You can work in France if you want, but you have to fulfil minimum stays in Portugal, and that is controlled by the Schengen system. You can move around the Schengen area, but don't forget which country authorised you to do so. Also, citizenship is not that simple. You have to live at least 5 years in Portugal and speak a reasonable level of Portuguese. Is that your case?

Wise words, it never pays to cheat the system because you will be found out. Ruining it for others is doubtful but if caught, it will ruin it for the person trying to chat thee system as they could be banned from entering the countries or the rest of the EU.

I was just trying to find out the viability of living in France instead of Portugal since there is no border control between two countries. If that is something considered as illegal by Portugal, I agree that it is not worh risking the citizenship.

It seems to me that you have not yet understood the answers.

You can move around the Schengen area for short stays without a visa, provided you have a residence permit from one of these Schengen countries.

Maybe you should apply for a resident permit in France instead...
