Utilities - Changing Names of Owners

canadaportugalvisa22

Hello,

Is anyone familiar with the process of changing the utilities (gas, water, electricity) into your name after you've become the registered owner?

In our case, we are awaiting the title to be transferred from an inheritance. Neither of us are currently residents and we've only heard anecdotally that it can take 3-6 months which seems strange.

Anyone do this recently and can share their experience?

This is not true.

This change is made immediately, but it should be requested in person and by the current owner (preferably) or POA (it must be written explicitly that POA can make that change of utilities).

I've already made it by email with all documents requested scanned and sent to them.

in our case we have the deed of succession. Is this enough for the head heir to submit in person?

JohnnyPT

No, it isn't.

The property must be in your name, both at the AT tax office and at the land registry (conservatória do registo predial). This must always be done before requesting a change in any of the utilities.

JohnnyPT

This happens in all countries. You can't change a utility without a lease or without proving you are the owner.....

Yes of course, that makes sense. I ask because I’m unsure what happens to next month’s bills. They are set up to be automatically deducted from the deceased’s bank account. However, that will soon be frozen (so we’ve been told) as part of the process of investigating the assets. So I’m just considering what options we can take and what evidence would be considered outside of a formal lease or property ownership.

Is it possible to contact the utility companies and have them send future bills by paper so they can be paid by us until the properties are transferred?

JohnnyPT

It is possible (I'm not sure) that the utilities authorise the change of NIB (debito directo), with an obit certificate and the deed in your name.
