Small motorbikes

Strontium

I've noticed several old small motorbikes being ridden, usually by old small men, and seem ideal for local transport and suitable for being maintained at home. I've even found a couple of places which seem to deal with these. Has anyone knowledge of the rules which cover these bikes? The seem to be about 100cc two stroke and are not having pedals like a moped? Are they subject to annual inspection, some road tax etc? I assume insurance is mandatory but where would this come from as they don't seem to be listed when I look for vehicle insurance?

There seem to several different makes of European origin like "Casal" and "Macal" and look like this :-

They look fantastic .

Haven't seen them around,personally.

However, if you also see an old Mercedes (W123, preferably) available at a reasonable price for an old small man, can you let me know, please? Appreciated.

I had an old small laugh reading this old small post.

I have read somewhere that if under 125CC that you can use a USA drivers license. I know that wasn't part of your question, but I thought I would add some extra info.

If I were looking at a small bike for local A to B trips, I would look at EV scooters.

Sealed lead/acid battery versions are dirt cheap but do the job.

Charging is done at home, and maintenance is minimal.

You're looking at 45 kph and a range of 40 or so km - easily enough for local transport

As for anything 2 stroke - don't.

Why is 2-stroke an issue?? .

I've bought a new car and 2 new (both 125cc) Honda motorbikes in Asia . Bikes cost around 1500 each. Almost no other costs,no road tax, few tolls, almost no maintenance and upkeep. (Eg 7 for a new tyre fitted or annual inspection). 4 for recent oil change service. Fuel less than 1 a litre.

In Portugal I looked at EV which doubled in price in a few years. Otherwise, been in Algarve 5 years and decided not to buy anything. I rent when needed to and can hire a car from airport for under 200 a month all in (in low season months).

Who manufactures them, and how long since they rolled off a production line?

Age is a major issue with small capacity bikes.

Pollution - 'Ouch' in a big way

Availability of two stroke oil. Bikes can generally accept a wide variety of oil types, but many have the disadvantage of being heavier than petrol, thus the oil sinks to the bottom of the tank, and/or smokes like mad when you burn the stuff.

2 strokes are a bad idea.

My next local runaround bike will be a Selis (Or similar) with a lead acid battery. If they are available over there, the things are worth a look.

Lithium ion batteries are still too expensive so the bikes tend to be poor value for money, but SLA batteries are cheap and good enough for short range travel.

Ok, thanks.

Just not really into the pollution thing as if efficient (and nothing is more competitive overall), then technology will eventually replace it.

If anything can be upgraded or parts replaced with age then all well and good.

Asia hasn't generally embraced EVs for motorcycles as present technology is cheap, reliable and trustworthy. As they still would be in Europe without government meddling and raiding our pockets through taxation on some vague climate fairy story
