Now Spain requires you to have passports when you check -into a hotel/ motel or whatever as they have to report it to guarda civil. Anyone has had the experience of their portuguese residence card being accepted in place of their passport? ressons for not using passport are 1. May be you lost it and it is going to be a while before you get a replacement and want to travel to Spain in the mean time.聽 just curious?

The PT residence permit isn't a travel document - if you're travelling outside PT as a non EU national resident in PT, you should have both passport and residence document with you.

Only a passport is guaranteed to be acceptable id for a non-EU national. Residence cards on their own are not. It's possible that some establishments might accept one in lieu of a passport but it's not something to rely on.
