Importing a car

kinggra68

Hi

I would appreciate if anyone on here has had experience of importing a car into Portugal from Canada. I found a previous importation of some boxes of personal items such as linens, household wares and photos etc to be a very complicated and expensive process despite having all the relevant documentation from the Portuguese Embassy submitted. I was charged a lot considering these were all previously owned and used by our family. We are Irish citizens but have dual citizenship in Canada and am possibly interested in importing my car. Any advice would be great, thank you  Grainne

First check if you are eligible for "tax" exemption on the one vehicle new resident scheme. If not then work out the vast amount of tax you'll pay on a vehicle import, this obviously does not include other fees you'll pay.  If you search on the forum these questions have been answered previously.

Here's some help ( PT Gov website):

There is a lot of information on the net, google it ‘Importation of motor vehicles into Portugal’

If you have no emotional attachment to this car, I think it's best to sell it and buy a new or second-hand one in Portugal. It's less trouble for you.
