Moving in June to Barcelona..need help!

adge

Hello, I am planning to move to BCN in June. I currently work in a hotel in Manchester, and it may be possible to transfer to the same hotel in BCN, but I am not sure if my Spanish is good enough, and you may have to speak French as well!

Anyway I dont know anybody in BCN, I just want an experience to stretch myself, throw myself in at the deep end as it were.

I speak enough Spanish, and obviosuly one of the reasons I want to go is to perfect my Spanish.

I am looking for a room to rent and a job.

This is a long shot, but if anybody knows any way of helping me, as in websites or ways of going about this?

I have been looking for rooms already , but I want to know as much information as possible from people who have already done a similar thing. Moreover, I would obviously like to chat to people so as maybe to have some acquaintances for when I arrive.

Thank you!

Aaron

Welcome on board adge ;)

Concerning employment, I will suggest you to browse through the articles on the Work in Spain guide page. It contains many useful information which will surely guide you in your career search.

For your accommodation, this link shall help you:

Hi Aaron/Adge!

This is Alba and I live in Barcelona (although I will probably leave to France in September). See below some links to websites where you may find a job in Barcelona.

infojobs.net/ (it's similar to Monster, Career Builder, etc.)
bcn.cat/porta22/es/ (from Barcelona city council)
trabajos.com/ (I don't know but it might be useful)

Another idea would be to apply for a job in IKEA or H&M because they usually hire foreign young people and as far as I know, they have a dream-like labour policy (people love to work there). Otherwise, you can try to work in any hotel, I heard once there are more than 40,000 in Barcelona, hehe.

As for the accommodation, I hope you have saved enough because appartments are pretty expensive. If you wanna live alone, bear in mind it could be very difficult to find an appartment below 1000€ (860 pounds) per month. If not, you may want to share it with someone.

To find a good place, you may need to check the newspaper on Sunday or go to a state agency and, to be honest, I don't know any which is reliable, since I live in my parents' place.

I hope I gave you a first overview and if you have more questions, don't hesitate to ask me again.

Cheers,

Alba :)

Ups! I forgot a very important thing. I don't know if you knew it but in Barcelona we speak two languages: Catalan and Spanish. Catalan grammar is very similar to French whereas the vocabulary is similar to Spanish. However, it's still a different language. There are many language schools to learn Catalan and I suggest you to do it because the law says that any client has the right to speak in Catalan, so any worker should understand him at least.

I know it isn't very good news, but this is how it is ^_^

Thank you very much for all that information!!
Well i dont plan to live alone, I would prefer just to rent a room, and as far as i can see they seem to be around 200-350 euros , which should be fine.

I do know about Catalan, however I heard from some people that it wouldn't be a problem if you dont speak Catalan. As far as I can see everybody speaks Spanish but I suppose you may find some people who speak Catalan instead.

Well...I am still learning Spanish but I suppose I should start on Catalan too :-S

Thank you again for taking the time to reply!

Sure! It depends on each person. I hope you don't have to deal with anyone who doesn't want to speak in Spanish even with foreign people. There are not many but you wouldn't be the first person who had a bad experience because of that reason. Don't lose heart anyway, everyone in Barcelona speaks Spanish and most of them Catalan because it became compulsory to learn it at school 20 years ago more or less.

I hope you have a great time in Barcelona! :)

HoveActually

Hi,

I agree with regards to the Catalan, they definitely appreciate it and it will improve your chances of getting a job.

Here is a free online course provided by the local government:

parla.cat/pres_catalaenlinia/AppPHP/login/index.php

or if you don´t want to do a course at least try and learn some useful phrases. I didn´t speak Spanish or Catalan when I arrived and picked Spanish up as I went along. Unfortunately if you get into the habit of speaking in Spanish then it makes it really difficult to switch to Catalan (well at least that´s my experience)try using the two from the beginning.

With regards to looking for a room, it´s easier to do it once you get here but here is a website that lots of people use:
