US Passport Card + Temp Residency Card

gnostic

Hello-

Is it possible to cross the border the CBX using a US passport card instead of your passport?

In other words – are we required to have our full passport with us when we cross the border from the US to Mexico or would a passport card suffice?

Thanks,

SD

Your passport card is only good for entering the US (Not by air) from certain countries. MX requires the book passport, to enter MX, regardless of visa status.

We drove down to Mexico last October with passport cards. What we were told is that Passport cards are only valid for 180 day visit entry and that's not free. But seven day visit is supposed to be free with a passport book only.

(Then again , I had doubts because of the language barrier and about the person giving us that information at the border).

You were "told" .  What transpired if you entered MX via car. What transpired when you departed MX.

My only experience has been departing and entering MX by air with US passport and MX visa Residente Permanente.

I know that MX government entities can be inconsistent in applying published law and procedures.

To spare you the boredom, I ll try to be as brief as possible. When we arrived at the MX border, The border agent inside the building had to talk to a couple of people before saying that we 'll have to pay for our visit of more than 7 days due to passport cards. We had already done our paperwork online before arriving based on passport card so it was too late to change all that. We were a family of five so the fee was significant .

Overall our experience at the arrival and departure at the border was very smooth, no issues.
