Jamaican mum wants to relocate to Mexico

vivveene

Hi Everyone,

I am Viv and I live in Jamaica (the Caribbean).

Relocating for 2022 is my plan and after doing some research, I am zeroed in on Mexico. There is so much I need to do and get prepared for this move, as a result, I am looking forward to learning as much as I can before I get there.

I noticed a comment was made that I cannot open a bank account before I become a permanent resident, may I asked how long this will take, because coming from the Caribbean, I am not sure if any of these banks here have banks in Mexico.

Looking forward to the wealth of knowledge and experiences from you all.

Welcome to ex-pat Mexico Viv,

You are correct you can't have a Mexican account before you are a permanent resident. How long that would take depends on your financial status and meeting all the requirements. In the meantime, if I were you I would be looking at a bank account that is likely to have a Mexican partner or a presence in Mexico. Some of us leave the money in the country we came from and then get cash using ATMs Others have Schwab accounts. Which I am told do not have an ATM fee.
Those are things you can look into. Why do they require that you have permanence before letting you have an account in Mexico? Because they have been burned by tourists popping in then leaving with debt or other issues.

good luck

Thank you for responding.

I am still researching all this information as I go along.
