Quadricycle

alan279

The Citrien Ami is classified as a quadricycle in Europe. The Ami cannot be driven on public streets in Brazil, I think. Could someone point me to pertinent regulations on such vehicles?

Thanks.

I can't help, but, having driven SMART cars for 9 years that's a pretty fofozinho looking toaster on wheels. I'd buy one.

alan279

@Gasparzinho 777 I saw a Smart car in Ilhéus a few times. I thought it would probably be a good car for Ilhéus.

The only reason I stopped driving one was that ALL PARTS were produced and tightly controlled by 1-2 sources. There was no aftermarket supply, nor garages outside of the $$$ Mercedes dealer network $$$ that were willing to touch them. So, a $15,900 vehicle had 12" tires that cost $1,500 installed, it needed a $1,500 service every 48,000 KM, had a $900 windshield etc. This Citroen may end up just like that too.

@Gasparzinho 777 Maybe BYD will offer a small car with reasonable maintenance costs in Brazil? They will start domestic production next year.

@jonesio Too heavy and no airbags to be driven on streets in Brazil. Sure is expensive. Thanks.

jonesio

@alan279 You're welcome. With 2024 nearing an end it seems unlikely that target will be met.

alan279

The new BYD factory in Camaçari hasn’t started production yet. BYD has grand plans in Brazil.

If I recall correctly, a lack of airbags and ABS brakes was the reason production of the Kombi had to be cancelled in Brazil. All new vehicles must have these to be legally driven on public roads.

alan279

@Peter Itamaraca Is there a Kombi replacement in Brazil?

I am unaware of one at the moment, but I am sure there are contenders. But in Brazil Kombis are not revered the way they are in the West (especially in Europe), and tend to be driven until they absolutely fall apart and are beyond saving...! So they will be around for many more years yet, but not new ones.

alan279

@Peter Itamaraca Are there any sports cars being built in Brazil today?

They keep teasing one -- an electric, yet -- in several countries, including Brazil, but so far I don't think it's been seen anywhere in the wild:

@alan279

Low ride height is a big issue in Brazil with the prevalence of speed bumps here (sleeping policemen we call them in the UK!) - so sports cars are very limited as to where they can be driven.

alan279

A Belgian friend once remarked that a Citroen 2CV might be the best car for Brazil. 😀

alan279

@alan279 Come to think of it, a 2CV would suit me well in Ilhéus today. 😀

alan279

@abthree I’m thinking that the new VW Microbus will first be spotted in Newport Beach.

Hence the popularity of the Toyota Hilux in Brazil?

Brasilian sports cars ?

Remember the Puma ?

alan279

@Gasparzinho 777 I remember the Puma. And I remember seeing some Porsche replicar ads, especially the 550 Spyder.
