Housing in Montevideo

Hello! My name is Kim Mortenson. I live in the U.S. and am thinking of coming to Montevideo and attending the universidad. I am having trouble finding information about housing. Will I be able to get a 1 br flat, though my son will be living with me? Is it more expensive near the universidad? Also, I have a pitbull. Are dogs allowed? Are there breed restrictions? How much should I expect to pay in rent (in pesos)? Thanks for any help you can provide. Oh, and one last thing. I hear that prices and organized crime (drugs/gangs) are rising. Is this so? Thanks again, so much.
