I understand your goals.   You would need a work permit to work for wages and it is unlikely you would get it.  Unemployment is very high here.  also you would have to live here for 6 months to apply for a work permit.  wages are very low.   a skilled master electricion will get $65 an day or $32.00 US dollars.   Surely there is a way to do as you wish, even if it requires more creative thought.   I was raised on a farm where we did our own work so am aware of the labor required to live on/off the land.  Perhaps you can try this in the USA firstt.  best luck.

You will run out of money fast in Belize, but don't let that discourage you.

Most people that moved here with the idea to live a self sustaining lifestyle, had to build up slowly. First they clear the land (most land you buy here is overgrown with bush), then build the house, plant trees, dig drain ditches, etc... In the meantime working in their respective countries to finance their dream. This might take two years or more depending on many factors.

Once you have all this built nicely, you can relocate quite comfortably. I know people that did that and now live with very little expenses. The only thing you need is gasoline, propane, food you can't grow yourself, etc... All that amounts to about $3000.00 USD a year, give or take.

You may sell whatever you grow on your farm on the local market and if your product is clean and high quality the resorts will buy it from you gladly. That may offset the expenses for gas and such.

You will get disappointed quite often and be ready to give up, but if you persevere and do it, it will be the best experience of your life, and quite fun too. Beats 9 to 5 hands down.

There are a lot of people that are thinking to do what you want and many do come to Belize with exactly the same goals as you, so there is quite a community already of like minded people that you will draw the inspiration from. And don't forget volunteers that come from all over the world once you have a place to shelter them that can help you with your plans.

As for the work permit, you don't need one. If you can show that you have land and money to improve it, you can ask for a self employment permit. After one year you can apply for a resident permit and you can work for wages if you want, but most probably you won't.

Scott. PECTOPAHs advice is very good. Once you have a piece of land you can go about settling in. If your poor, the land you get will probably not have electricity so that will be quite an adjustment from Denver. Learning to use a machete will be a major challenge until you can properly sharpen it and understand the difference between a Colima and a Warisama. Then you need to learn how to split leaf for thatching your roof on your shack hopefully made from stick that will last a few years. If you've never planted corn and beans with a pointed stick, it's not that hard but it takes awhile to plant a manzana one hole at a time. You may or may not get malaria, denque, and/or beef worms so you'll need to know some bush medicine. If your rich, I don't have any advice for you. I came to Belize poor and I did all of the above and I'm still here after 34 years and I still love it.

Thanks for all the advice . I really appreciate what everyone has to say, and am excited to learn more. I plan to come and stay very soon and get the feel for it. I will be working with very minimal and i like it that way.I know it will take time , and im down to spend the time doing it. Im very much excited to end up with the like minded people who are on the same path of a self sufficient state of being .

Howdy Scott, we are on the same journey in life that you seem to be on. We are also considering the move to Belize and will be making this journey without much money as well. I came across this website in my research and have found it very exciting and motivating for the way of life we are wanting to live.
