Double-glazed window costs

JimJ

If anyone's interested in having UPvc double-glazed windows installed, just ask/reply to the thread. I've just had a quote for a renovation we're doing, and this is just another thing that's shot up in price over the past few years.

I should add that we aren't going to install the cheapest or the most expensive system, but rather what fits the situation, ie a non-opt-outable-of "contract" with the local District Heating monopoly whereby you get to pay for the heating whether you want it or not....another vagary of life in BG! 😄

In our region, prices for double glazing and doors are great… and luckily for people, prices didn’t go up much (not much at all). We are saying this just because our neighbours just had their windows and doors installed through the company of our recommendation, it was a very good deal.

JimJ

We've had some very good deals, but also some "very good" deals which were pretty shoddy in terms of the quality of both materials and installation.  The company we're using comes very well-recommended, but I guess that the proof of the pudding etc... 😎

tutisservis

Certainly not shoddy in our case… great quality, fast installation…

We're going to need to get ours done. I'd hoped to avoid it and set up some sort of removable storm windows for winter, because I like the old wooden windows. Unfortunately they're probably past saving.

I'd be very interested to know what current costs might be.

@janemulberry

I've uploaded a screenshot of part of the quote: it shows colour, sizes etc.  It's in Bulgarian but Google Translate can extract the text and translate it in situ.  The Mod Team have to review pictures, so I don't know when it will appear in My Pictures

janemulberry

Thank you! A little more expensive than I anticipated, but we have far fewer windows. Your quote gives me some idea how much to budget.

JimJ

@janemulberry

Note that the quote also includes external insulated metal roller blinds - manually-operated, due to the unpredictability of power-cuts.  We have a larger gauge of blinds at our house, which are operated by electric motors.  There ARE exits routes from all floors which don't involve us being stuck inside if we have a fire AND a power loss simultaneously...  😎

JimJ

Sorry to anyone who was hoping to get an idea of the costs from my photo - the °µÍø½ûÇø Big Brother has decided that the extract I uploaded is X-rated or some other nonsense... 🙄

We had nine windows and two doors installed a couple of years ago for 4,200 lev

This is something I'm going to need to do. I'm going to need 12 windows and 3 doors. Though I'm quite capable of fitting them myself, so I'm wondering if anywhere sells windows and doors 'off the shelf' like places like Wickes do here in the UK? I don't mind enlarging or shrinking a hole to suit an off the shelf item.

Look at Praktiker, Ben, to get an idea of prices for DIY installing windows: Their range is quite limited but they may have what you need.

There must be some kind of glazing firm near. Ok I'm not in Bulgaria but in Austria.

7 windows (all different sizes)

French doors (not standard size)

I measured up, gave the firm the measurements, and they made them for me. A week later, they were ready for collection. Oh apart one, that was longer because of the size 8' x 5', never again the damn thing weighed a ton, treble glazed.

JimJ

Decent units cost decent money, I'm afraid.  We did a "cheap and cheerful" upgrade in the bottom floor of our house and regretted it a few years later.

Just as an example from the "banned quote", a 2.7m x 1.4m run of 4 windows in Golden Oak uPVC with the good locking mechanism that the insurance companies prefer, 24mm double glazing, mosquito screen and an external manually-operated insulated metal (aluminium sandwich) roller blind comes in at 3,278 leva installed.  Bear in mind that you'll need to get the plastering finished after the installation - unless you're a fan of expansion foam...😎

janemulberry

Ah, I wondered if those prices included finishing or just installing.

@bendouglas1286

As Jane said. Praktiker, we are going to be installing ourselves too. Their website does have the option to put it in English for a guide price.

bendouglas1286

Thanks all I'll check out Praktiker. The windows and doors are going to be the first job to do, especially since one of the windows is entirely missing and is just boarded up lol

JimJ

Ah, I wondered if those prices included finishing or just installing. - @janemulberry

The price of windows here never includes finishing, unless you buy the units and then hire someone to install them and plaster afterwards.

The window companies obviously don't feel that the hassle involved is worth it, since many people either get a "plasterer" in or do it yourself - my wife is a dab hand at plastering...but in the current circumstances our builder will do that, and a lot more plastering besides after he's knocked a few walls down.

janemulberry

Oh my! You have a LOT going on right now!

I am going to have a go at plastering some unfinished external surrounds for a couple of ground floor windows -- our last builder installed a bathroom window while completely revamping the windowless muddy hole that was labelled a bathroom before, and did a great job of plastering and tiling the interior. But he left the exterior unfinished. And in the process of throwing the old mud plaster rubble from the kitchen and bathroom out the kitchen window, he managed to break the external window sill. The window there is lovely and solid, good enough to keep, and I will set up a removable removable interior and exterior secondary glazing system for the winter there. I will probably make a mess, but at least it will be my mess, not a mess I paid someone else to make!

But the room that most urgently needs window replacements is the only one that's also on the second floor. I'm not crazy enough to attempt to bodge a plaster job while up a ladder on my own! I will need to find a plasterer when I get  those windows done.
